Sentries of the Ocean Walkway

The Ocean Walkway in Wailea is a 1.5 mile path between the ocean and resorts.  Public parking is available at the north and south end.  There is also a small obscure parking lot between the Grand Wailea and the Four Seasons.

Whale watching off season

I did see a few whales last week from the water and beach….very unusual for May.  It will be November before the humpback whales return to Hawaii’s warm water.

Yes, you can see whales year round.

Whale sculpture Kalama Park in Kihei

Whale sculpture Whaler’s Village, Kaanapali

Those are five examples.  Have you found the others?

For whale watching in July, I also recommend the movie “Whale Rider” starring 12-year-old Keisha Castle-Hughes nominated for Best Actress for her role.  “Whale Rider” was filmed in New Zealand in 2002.

Citrus

Tangerine harvest

Tangerine harvest

This year our tangerines have been a treat.  Yes, citrus trees thrive in the tropics in the areas with less rainfall.  (No luck with grapefruit.)

Plumeria Blooms 2

Plumeria blooms shed after a long rain shower and gusty winds.  Yes, the fresh ones would make a beautiful fragrant lei.  These trees are known best as Hawaiian, however they are native of Mexico, Central and South America.

The trees have lovely green leaves which shed annually.  The clusters of blooms are bold, beautiful and fragrant.  This a yellow Plumeria.  There are also white and rainbow (or pink) varieties.

The leading edge of the kite is an inflated tube, which maintains the shape/aerodynamics.  There was one photographer on the beach and a second one in the water (north side of fish pond).  This group of professionals performed multiple stunts as they “flew” 20-25 mph across the water.

The humpback whales were on the horizon having their own playtime.

Two egrets

After heavy rains in Kihei, mowing is challenging.  To my delight the first egret landed, it had no fear of stopping to bag the clippings and restarting the mower.  He had a ferocious appetite for bugs.  Fantastic!! Mother Nature’s pest management on the job for free.  My neighbor tells me the egrets come when they hear mowers running.  Then there were two, three and four.  It’s a party!

A local author also writes about egrets.  Check it out.
