A Few Views from Wailea

Greetings from the popular Ocean Walkway in Wailea!
Humpback whales are very active January-March. Photo Opportunities are challenging.
Never know when and where they will break the surface.
I never got the hang of taking selfies…soooo I took a pic of my shadow.

At midnight on Tuesday, November 23, 1982 during the rages of Hurricane Iwa,

this large boulder this large boulder was deposited by a mighty wave on this very spot.

Maui sustained minor storm damages compared to other islands which were devastated by the hurricane.

Wailea’s location and good fortune prevented anyone from being injured.

Plaque in photo.

Citrus

The areas of arid climate on Maui are naturally good locations for citrus trees.

The oranges are home grown. Tangerines will ripen next month. Our neighbor (with several lemon trees) seems to have ripe lemons year round.

YES the orange juice is delicious. NO sugar added 😉 BTW the pineapple is from the grocery 😉

Aloha!

Valley

www.mahipono.com also includes Maui Harvest supplying locally grown produce.

For decades, agriculture Maui’s valley was dominated by sugar cane operations and pineapple fields. Now agriculture has 41,000 acres under new management. Extraordinary! Each tree planted has its own water supply with drip and fanjet irrigation. Also, weed mats between rows slows water evaporation.

Launched in 2018 as a partnership, “Mahi Pono is a joint venture between Pomona Farming LLC, a California-based agricultural group and the Public Sector Pension Investment Board, one of Canada’s largest pension investment managers”.

Maui Research and Technology Park

The website for Maui Tech Park is in need of an update. http://mauitechpark.com

Two big beautiful facilities in the Research and Technology Park are not yet featured on the website.  Both Maui Brewing Company and Kihei Charter School (specializing in STEM) are thriving!

DIRECTIONS:

East on Lipoa Street, cross Piilani Hwy toward Haleakala, Lipoa Street transitions to Lipoa Parkway beautifully lined with large trees. The entrance to Maui Nui Golf Course is on the south side of the parkway.

New on Halama Street

This beauty is three levels with almost 360 degree catwalk for the second and third floors.  The second level outdoor seating area has ceiling fans on the oceanside.  Just steps away from Kalama Park and beaches.  The sign says application has been made for “Bed and Breakfast” permit.

The lot for this home is described as beach front…it’s more like the beach is across the street with residences in-between.  This home’s site plan has the main living area facing Haleakala!  The photos from the North and South sides of the house does not do the view of Haleakala justice.  It must be impressive from the inside and backyard.  There is an apartment above the two car garage.

Smoke! Fire!

We saw smoke on the windmill ridge from Wailea.  Within 2 hours, social media had reports of a small brush fire…that spread…4100 acres

THIS WEEK:

https://www.mauinews.com/news/local-news/2019/10/fire-blackens-over-4100-acres/

FOLLOWS the major brush fire in the valley in July….10,000 acres

https://www.usnews.com/news/national-news/articles/2019-07-12/residents-allowed-to-return-home-after-maui-fire-burns-10-000-acres

Controlled burns of debris from sugar cane grown in the valley have been business as usual on Maui for decades.  Sugar cane was irrigated.  Every third or fourth year in a rotation, the exhausted plants were burned and the field replanted.  Since sugar cane has been discontinued (no irrigation), brush took over.  The land is still designated agricultural use.  Test plots evaluated with a variety of different crops expected to be cultivated.
