Glorious Sun Rise

Hawaii and perhaps many vacation destinations are known for glorious sunsets. Between five and six p.m. people pause, situate themselves for a view of the western sky.

On Maui, there are several options for seeing the sunrise from the top of Haleakala. Drive yourself to the 10,000 ft summit, join a comfort tour or the extra special tour that hauls mountain bikes to the summit for you, so you can coast 28 miles back to sea level.

My personal favorite is to rise early on Monday, Wednesday and Fridays go to Kihei Aquatic Center to swim laps.  By 7:15 a.m. during winter months the sun will rise over Haleakala.  Advantages: price free, more sleep and exercise too!

What’s for dinner?

Maui Tacos

Maui Tacos

Great choice!  Island fish tacos are prepared with black beans instead of refried beans is their signature dish.  Maui Tacos is a celebrity favorite.  They have autographed photos to prove it at their main location.

Jawz

I prefer the generous servings from Jaws at the Azeka shopping center.  They have a nice dining area and a wonderful salsa bar to customize your choice.

Fabric of our lives

The Fabric Mart  has a new site on Dairy Road in Kahului.  I stopped in today and took a few photos to share.  Like language and music, humanity shares the necessity and luxury of having fabrics in our lives.  The vibrant colors and bold patterns shown here are distinctly Hawaiian.

12-12-2012

I picked my travel date because American Airlines was offering double frequent flyer miles, my birthday, vacation time to use before the end of the year, lower fares than Thanksgiving and Christmas.  Humpback whales have returned to the warm waters.  Me, too!

It is great to be back!  Erica brought to our attention in yoga class this morning that today is a very auspicious day from a numerology/spiritual point of view.  This is one link in a Google search.

Better still, there is a new moon tonight.  Rather than considering Mayan doomsday prophesies, December 21, 2012; there is a good case made for great new beginnings.

Several days have passed.  I have watched the new moon setting on the western horizon…cresent turned up like a bowl to be filled with possibilities. 12-15-2012

Amazing Photos

Here I go again.  I’ll be back in Maui in a week.  My neighbor sent several magazines for me to read in my flight over.

This article is outstanding.  The best view I have had of the night sky was from the water.  It was the return trip of a Halloween evening cruise between Maalaea and Lahaina.  The contrast of the stars and the blackness of the night sky was breathtaking!  This photography is the closest to my memories of those views.

Enjoy!

Over the Rainbow

We were over a rainbow descending to Kahului airport this trip.  How special!  I did not get a photo, however was pleasantly surprised with “Behind the Rainbow, Why Hawai’i has the Best” article in Maui No Ka’Oi magazine July Aug 2012, page 38.  (Link in the right margin.)  Rita Goldman included explanations in terms of physics, legends and spiritual tradition.  The photos are the best!

Over 9.5 million You Tube views!  Must see and hear 🙂  http://www.izhawaii.com/over-the-rainbow-official-video/

What’s new? With “after” pics

Traffic circle and bicycle path with blooming Plumeria trees, drinking fountains, lighting and park benches with mountain views!

The landscaping of the traffic circle is sooo fine the aerial view must look like a beautiful mandala.

Swap Meet

One of the most local institutions is the weekly Swap Meet now held on the campus of Maui Community College in Kahului.  Saturdays from 7:00 am to 1:00 pm, admission $.50 per person.  This new location has less shade, but better parking and permanent paved aisles.
